Heartburn is a painful and burning sensation that is felt in the middle of the chest which usually occurs within an hour after eating. It can be a tolerable discomfort for some people but for others, it can be a severe discomfort that can disrupt one’s sleep. It is a pain that is normally experience at night. Here are the reasons why.
- During the day, your body is in upright position so the gravity helps to empty the esophagus of acid.
- When you are awake, you swallowed at approximately two times per minute and this allows the production of more saliva which in turn helps neutralize the acid that is present in the esophagus.
- At night time, the defense mechanism of the esophagus (that reflex which push contents of the esophagus back into the stomach) barely function at all.
- When you lie down, the stomach and the esophagus at almost on the same level with each other causing acid from stomach contents to flow back into the esophagus.
- Lying down immediately after eating (less than two hours) can cause the reflux of acid.
Quick Remedies for Heartburn
- As soon as you are feeling the attack of heartburn, sit up or stand up.
- Loosen restrictive clothing such as tight pants, belt or waistbands.
- Take a dose of antacids such as Tums or Alka-Seltzer
- Home remedies like one teaspoon of organic apple cider mix with 8 oz of water also works for a lot of people.
- Another proven home remedy is to mix 1 teaspoon if baking soda with 8 oz of water.
- Sleep on your left side.
- Elevate the head of your bed by about 6 inches making sure that the chest are also elevated.
