When one is pregnant especially the last trimester, acid reflux can really be a problem. This is because the weight of the growing baby pushes the stomach up. This in turn can cause pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter which connects the stomach and the esophagus. When the esophageal sphincter is not working as it should, it can allow acid and fluids up the esophagus.
Sometimes the problem is so severe that hospitalization is necessary. Weight gained during pregnancy can also cause one to have acid reflux. This weight is mostly around the stomach and it can distort the position of the internal organs including the stomach.
During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone are produced by the ovaries and later by the placenta for the growth of the baby. These hormones relax the muscles especially the uterus to make room for the growing baby. This muscle relaxation affects the lower esophageal sphincter and makes food and acid reflux a possible occurrence.
Sitting positions can also put pressure on the stomach and force the contents to reflux into the esophagus. Try not to sit upright. During bedtime, sleep on the side. Meals should also be taken moderately but frequently throughout the day. Remember that during this period, there is a lot of pressure on the stomach and it cannot handle much. If one smokes or takes alcohol its high time to stop. These do cause harm to your growing baby and acid reflux too. Spicy foods and acidic fruits should also be avoided if one has a problem of acid reflux.
An acid reflux pillow is advised during bedtime. This will drastically reduce the symptoms. Medication is not advised unless the problem is chronic. Antacids should be avoided as they do have side effects. Note that they do not solve the problem.
