Most people have experienced acid reflux at some point in their lives. It could be an isolated incident, an occasional thing, or all the time. Acid reflux happens when your esophageal sphincter muscle becomes weak and allows stomach acid and bits of undigested food to back up out of the stomach and into the throat. This can cause a lot of pain and can even damage the esophageal lining. Being overweight, overeating, and eating certain spicy foods can exacerbate the acid reflux and make it worse. Many people turn to over the counter remedies for occasional episodes of this condition. For others who have it more chronically, taking prescription medications may be the best solution. Fortunately, there are also many home remedies for acid reflux, so if you are uncomfortable taking prescription medication, some of these remedies may work for you.
Apple cider vinegar is one of the best home remedies for acid reflux. It also helps treat a variety of other health conditions. The acidity of the vinegar is similar to that of stomach acid, and so helps you to digest the food that you’ve eaten before it has a chance to come back up into your throat.
Chewing gum also helps alleviate symptoms of acid reflux. Chewing the gum increases the production of saliva. Saliva is a natural antacid, so as you chew the gum, the saliva will neutralize any stomach acid that may be coming up in your esophagus.
Almonds are also helpful. They are also cheap and easy to obtain. They have a very neutral pH balance, which can help neutralize damaging stomach acid. Eating a handful of them any time you feel like you are getting acid reflux will head the symptoms off at the pass and give you some relief. Just make sure the almonds are plain and not salted. They can be roasted or raw and be effective.
It is a good idea to eat a lot of bland foods with neutral or alkaline pH balances. Bananas, papayas, and other similar things will all help negate the effects of acid reflux. On the other hand, eating a lot of acidic, spicy foods will make the symptoms worse. Another trick you might want to try is sleeping with your head elevated, especially if you start seeing symptoms at night. When you sleep flat, it is easier for acid to come up into your throat. Sleeping with your head elevated will keep the acid in your stomach, where it belongs. All of these home remedies are effective, but if they don’t seem to be helping, or if your symptoms get worse, you should always see a doctor for a thorough medical evaluation and more powerful treatments.
